Clare is an investigative journalist turned novelist whose debut, Hide & Seek, was shortlisted for the YoungMinds award for books that illuminate our understanding of children’s thinking. Since Summer 2009 Clare has set aside her proper work to fight the UK government’s appalling policy of locking up asylum-seeking families – in particular women and children – in places like Yarl’s Wood detention centre. With friends (all working unpaid) she formed End Child Detention Now, whose press campaign — led by Clare working pro bono — has effected an astonishing rise in the amount and quality of press reporting about the harmful effects of detention on families, helping to pressure the government to abandon the detention policy.
